CLASSES

Summer Theater Camp Offered At 'Boro's Center For The Arts

Amy BaltimoreThe Center for the Arts is offering summer theater camps for students who will be entering first through twelfth grades, plus a mini-camp for pre-schoolers age 4-6.

Amy Baltimore, who recently directed the bilingual Aladdin musical at the Center, will be directing all four Center Stage Academy camps. Junior sessions for kids entering grades one through six will be held June 3-14 with a performance on June 15, and again June 17-28 with a performance on June 29. The senior session for those entering grades 7-12 will run July 8-19 with a July 20 performance, and the mini-camp will be held July 22-26, with a July 27 show.

Junior and senior sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for two weeks. For the junior camps, the morning agenda covers theater fundamentals and instruction on the more technical aspects of theater such as costuming, makeup, set design, set and prop creation, and the production process. Afternoons are devoted to vocal instruction, choreography and rehearsals for the mini-musical production which will be the highlight of each camp. These performances, held at 10 a.m. on the Saturday of the second camp week, will showcase skills learned in the classes and include selections from favorite Disney musicals with a focus on personification and animal characterization.

The senior session for middle and high school students will offer instruction on performance fundamentals in the morning, but the focus will be on developing technical theater skills such as lighting programs, set design and costume profiles.. In the afternoon, participants will put together their own production of repertoire pieces and musical selections which will close out the camp at 10 a.m. July 27.

Mini-campers will attend from 9 to noon Monday through Friday and perform at 10 a.m. on Saturday July 27. Basic theater skills they have learned will be demonstrated along with a simplified choreographed performance of one selection from a Disney musical.

Tuition for the Center Stage Academy camps is $200 for junior and senior sessions and $125 for the mini-camp. Each session is limited to 35 students. For more information or reservations, call the Center at 615 904-2787 or go online at www.boroarts.org.
